Carl Cohen
From Equality Talk Wiki
Professor Carl Cohen became a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Michigan in 1955. He celebrated his 50th year there in 2005, and continues to teach in to undergraduate honors students in the Residential College program. Cohen is known for his leadership role in the Michigan ACLU during the 1960s and 1970s, and his philosophical research in areas of animal rights and racial equality. Politically, he is most known for being the person who used FOIA in 1996 to uncover the "grid system" of admissions to the University of Michigan undergraduate schools. This system became the underpinning of Gratz v. Bollinger and sparked the interest in U-Michigan policies that also lead to Grutter v. Bollinger.
Cohen is one of the rare ACLU members and university professors who oppose race preferences.
